Late-Summer Fertilizer Timing in Northern Colorado (Johnstown, Berthoud, Loveland)

Late summer into early fall is the single best window of the year to feed a cool-season lawn in NoCo. Done right, it thickens roots, crowds out weeds, and sets up a strong spring. Done wrong, it can push weak top growth right before a heat wave. Here's the simple timing guide.

1) Why late summer is the right window

Bluegrass and tall fescue — the two most common lawn types in Johnstown, Berthoud, Loveland, and Fort Collins — slow their top growth in late July and shift energy underground. Fertilizing now feeds the roots instead of forcing a flush of weak leaf growth that struggles in 90°F+ days.

2) Pick the right product

Most NoCo lawns do well with a balanced or slightly nitrogen-forward fertilizer at label rates. The exact blend depends on your last soil test, grass type, and whether you're also seeding.

Not sure? A quick soil test (CSU extension offers them) takes the guesswork out of phosphorus and potassium numbers.

3) Time it around watering

Granular fertilizer needs water to move off the blades and into the soil. Most NoCo sprinkler zones put down about a quarter inch in 15–20 minutes.

4) Don't skip the basics first

Fertilizer won't fix coverage problems, compaction, or mowing mistakes. Run through this quick check before you open the bag:
