1) Why late August beats spring for broadleaf weeds
Most NoCo homeowners spray weeds in spring and wonder why they're back by July. The reason: spring is a leaf-stage spray, and the plant is pushing energy upward. In late summer, the plant is doing the opposite — pulling energy down to overwinter. A fall application moves with that flow.
- Dandelions, clover, plantain, and bindweed respond much better to fall treatments.
- Cooler nights + warm days = less stress on the cool-season turf around the weeds.
- You start next spring with a noticeably cleaner lawn.
2) The NoCo window: late August → mid-September
For Johnstown, Berthoud, Loveland, Fort Collins, Windsor, and Greeley, the consistent window is the last week of August through about September 15. Timing shifts a few days either way depending on elevation and how early the nights cool off.
3) Prep the lawn 24–48 hours before treatment
- Mow at normal height a day or two before — don't scalp.
- Water lightly if the lawn is dry (product needs leaf surface to stick).
- Avoid fertilizing the same week unless it's part of a planned fall program.
- Don't mow again for 2–3 days after application so the product stays on the leaves.
4) Match the product to the weed
Not every weed responds to the same active ingredient. A quick ID matters:
- Dandelion, plantain, clover: standard broadleaf blends work well in fall.
- Bindweed: tougher — usually needs a targeted product and a repeat application.
- Goat's beard, thistle: tap-rooted; fall timing is the strongest chance to reach the root.
5) Pair it with the rest of your fall plan
Weed control is most effective when it's stacked with the other late-season moves that help cool-season turf outcompete weeds next year:
- Core aeration in September–October (opens the soil for thicker root growth).
- Fall overseeding in thin areas (fills the gaps weeds would otherwise take).
- Late-fall fertilizer (feeds the roots, not just the top).
- Final mow at 2.0–2.25" before the lawn goes fully dormant.
6) When to call a pro
- You've sprayed the same weeds two springs in a row with no improvement.
- Bindweed or thistle is spreading into garden beds.
- You want a single fall visit that handles weeds + aeration + seeding + fertilizer in the right order.
