Why this matters right now
If you live in Johnstown, Loveland, Berthoud, Greeley, Fort Collins, Windsor, Milliken, Timnath, Severance, Mead, Longmont, Evans, Firestone, Frederick, Eaton, or Ault, you already know the drill: spring gave way to fast-growing turf, and now the wind starts doing its thing. In Northern Colorado, the easiest way to lose a lawn is to assume every problem is just “needs more water.”
The better approach is simpler: look at the whole yard. Mowing, irrigation, and soil moisture work together. If one piece is off, the lawn shows it fast.
1) Walk the lawn before the mower starts
Before you cut, take a slow lap around the yard. You’re looking for the things that don’t show up from the street: dry strips near the curb, soggy corners, sprinkler heads spraying the sidewalk, and turf that looks thin where the sun hits hardest. Those are the spots that usually need attention first.
- Brown or gray patches that stay dry after watering
- Arched sprinkler spray that misses the turf
- Broken heads, tilted heads, or heads clogged with grit
- Runoff on driveways, patios, or sidewalks
2) Keep mowing high enough to protect the turf
When summer arrives, many lawns do better with a slightly taller cut. Taller grass shades the soil, helps roots stay cooler, and gives the yard a better shot at handling heat between waterings. It also makes it easier to spot irregular patches before they spread.
The biggest mistake is scalping the lawn because it looks “cleaner” for a day. In NoCo, that usually backfires. If the grass gets cut too short, the roots work harder, the soil dries faster, and weeds get more room to move in.
- Don’t remove more than one-third of the blade at a time
- Keep mower blades sharp so the cut is clean
- Try to mow when the lawn is dry enough to avoid clumping and rutting
3) Don’t guess on irrigation
Competitors in Northern Colorado talk a lot about sprinkler repair and summer watering, but the real win is getting your system to water evenly. A dry stripe is usually a coverage issue, not just a “more minutes” issue. That can mean a clogged nozzle, low pressure, a bad head, or a zone that’s throwing water where it shouldn’t.
If one area keeps going dry while the rest looks fine, don’t just extend the whole schedule. Check the zone and watch it run. Sometimes a small adjustment solves the problem faster than a full watering overhaul.
- Look for heads that don’t pop up fully
- Check for misting that gets blown away in the wind
- Watch for overspray onto hardscaping and patios
- Make sure new seed, slopes, and shaded areas aren’t being treated the same as everything else
4) Match the job to the service you actually need
Sometimes the issue is maintenance. Sometimes it’s a landscape fix. And sometimes it’s both. That’s why we like keeping things straightforward: if the lawn needs consistent care, stay ahead of it. If the irrigation system is off, fix the coverage. If the outdoor space needs more structure, talk about a patio, retaining wall, or other hardscaping that reduces the amount of trouble you’re fighting every week.
For mowing, edging, trimming, and a regular schedule that keeps growth under control.
For broken heads, uneven coverage, blowouts, repairs, and seasonal adjustments.
For patios, walls, and outdoor living space that can make yard upkeep easier overall.
5) What to watch for over the next two weeks
After you make adjustments, don’t walk away and assume it’s handled. Give the lawn a couple of weeks and watch the same problem spots again. If the same dry patch returns, the fix may be more than a runtime adjustment. If the mower is leaving the grass stressed, the cut height may need to come up. If water keeps hitting the sidewalk, the zone needs correction.
This is where a local crew helps. A family-owned team that works in NoCo every week knows the difference between temporary stress and a problem that needs real attention.
