The 1-question rule: can you still see grass?
Look straight down at the lawn after a windy day. If you can still see grass blades and soil through the leaves, mulching is the right call. If the layer is thick enough to hide the turf, bag it or rake it — otherwise the leaves mat down, trap moisture, and invite snow mold and vole damage through winter.
Mulching done right (what to do this week)
- Mow with a sharp blade on a dry day.
- Bagging attachment off so clippings and chopped leaves drop back into the canopy.
- Take the top third off, then a second pass from a different angle if coverage is heavy.
- Aim for leaf pieces the size of a fingernail or smaller.
When bagging is the better call
- More than ~50% of the lawn is covered with whole leaves.
- Leaves are wet, matted, or already starting to pack down.
- The lawn is shaded and slow to dry — matted leaves + shade = fungus risk.
- You're heading into the final fall cut and want the surface clean before winter.
Front Range timing (Johnstown, Loveland, Berthoud)
Peak leaf drop on the Front Range usually runs mid-October through early November. Plan on 2–4 cleanup passes during that stretch:
- Mid-October: first heavy drop — usually a mulch-and-mow pass is enough.
- Late October: second pass, often mixed mulch + bag if coverage is heavy.
- Early November: final cleanup before the first hard freeze — bagging usually wins here.
If a snow hits before the last cleanup, the leaves underneath will pack down hard. A quick post-snow rake or blower pass prevents the worst matting.
Beds, gutters, and the spots people forget
- Leaf piles in shrub beds trap moisture against trunks and bark — pull them back.
- Clogged gutters are the #1 cause of fall ice dams along the Front Range — clean before the first hard freeze.
- Don't blow leaves into the street; they end up in storm drains and neighbor yards.
When to call a crew
- Tree cover is heavy and weekly DIY cleanup is eating your Saturdays.
- You want one final cleanup bundled with the last mow and edging.
- Leaves are matting down faster than you can keep up — book a bi-weekly visit through November.
